Ranveer Singh
Now I have the queen and the best films
Bolly.id - 2018, by any standard was the year of Ranveer Singh. The most sought after average Joe of Bollywood, who was dismissed in the initial phase, remained in the news for many reasons in 2018. Ranveer created a stir with Padmavat in which he played Alauddin Khilji chasing queen Padmavati played by real life lover Deepika Padukone. All through the year, his fans were engaged in the rumour of will he, won’t he get married to Deepika. But finally he did-towards the end of the year, Ranveer emerged as the most lovable groom of the nation.
He stole the limelight, as he got married to India’s top list actress in a traditional ceremony in Italy. Of all the celebrity marriages that took place in 2018, Ranveer-Deepika’s wedding is the most talked about wedding. The lovely couple had almost a month long wedding celebration which started in Italy and ended in a Mumbai in a glittering reception.
Ranveer, 33, well-known to be a traditional Sindhi boy has been growing from strenght to strenght. After surprising everyone in Padmavat, he ruled as a corrupt policeman in Simmba. Now he is ready with yet another movie titled Gullyboy, directed by Zoya Akhtar in which he plays a rapper.
The actor has been on a winning spree and has clearly defeated every young star. It is not just his acting and roles that are making news. Ranveer has set an image with his quirky style of dressing.
He is known to be extremely fascinated by the world of cinema, where he treats everyone with love. No one has heard about Ranveer being a bully as he is the most loved boy for his unit members. Being the face some of the prominent brand, Ranveer even confessed on the show Koffee With Karan, that he goes for every event and party that he is invited to for money. Perhaps he is the only actor besides Shah Rukh Khan, who has admitted to ‘dancing in the marriages or even a birthday party’ for money.
Along with Deepika, he has emerged as one of the top brands. All those who wanted to see the golden couple together, here is the good news-Ranveer has signed 83-this is the film based on the life of cricket captain Kapil Dev enacted by Ranveer. Deepika will play Kapil Dev’s wife Romi. The film, directed by Kabir Khan is scheduled to release in April 2019. He will also be seen in Karan Johar’s period drama Takht, which has an interesting mix of ensemble cast consisting of Anil Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Kareena Kapoor Khan and more.
Here are the excerpts of an interview in which he talks about his life after marriage, his successful movies and his hunger to do more:
This has been your year, with most of successful movies delivered by you and also your marriage?
Ans: Yes, God has been kind and we have been working very hard to achieve what we have done. This was the year of luck. I am very fortunate to have a wonderful person in my life. All the luck has come from her. She has been a super encouraging person, who stands by me always.
Tell us about film Gully Boy. You seem to be too excited about it?
When Zoya Akhtar narrated the script to me, I felt this was my film. If anyone would have done it, I would have felt very bad. I would have felt very jealous, in fact. I wanted to work in the movie when I heard the script. I think this one was a character that I was very eager to work on. Trust me, the audience will love the characters in the movie.
Q: Yours was the marriage that anyone could die for. Why did you have the dream wedding in Italy?
I wanted to have the wedding just the way Deepika wanted. Whatever she wished, I wanted her to have it. (laughs) That’s the first step in being the husband of the millennium. It was her vision of getting married, and I simply agreed to it. Whatever she wanted, it was done exactly in that manner. She deserves every bit of it and I knew my happiness comes from her happiness. It’s that simple a thing in a relationship.
You both do not have any precondition of working only with each other. For instance, in Simbaa you worked with Sara Ali Khan and now in Gully Boy you working with Alia Bhatt?
Sara is like a fresh gush of fragrance. She has a unique style, it was wonderful to work with her. I simply loved working with her and she has huge potential.
How was it to work with Alia Bhatt?
Before working on ‘Gully Boy’, I did some ads with Alia and they were really fun. She is a lovely person. But when I worked with her in Gully Boy, I realised what a powerhouse of a talent she is. Alia is immensely talented, expressive, full of emotion, very intelligent and that her emotional quotient is very high, due to which she can play any character she wants to.
Have you seen any of her movies?
Alia has evolved as a person far beyond her years. She is on her way to greatness. She was really brilliant in 'Raazi'. I have been an admirer of her work and craft ever since 'Highway'," added the actor, who plays a street rapper in the film.
Do you think with Simmba and Gully Boy, you are foraying into this genre of masala movies, which is inherently loved by the masses?
We are Bollywood oriented and our films have been all about loud entertainment. Masala films are what we are about- we enjoy it from the heart. These two films are for the masses. You don’t find it anywhere else. This genre is the typical indian film that define us. This is us, we are exuberant, and expressive and this is the reason that I enjoy the movie. The films evoke a certain kind of reaction, which will make all of us proud.
How do you look at Rohit Shetty’s treatment of movies, considering Simmba did exceptionally well
He knows his craft and our audience enjoys it. I enjoyed every moment when the audience was with the character Simbaa. This was because Rohit knew what the character would look like. I went to watch the movie in the theatre, and was floored to see the audience response. I always wanted to be a part of his movies, and the experience of Simbaa is remarkable.
The success of Padmavat and Simbaa has cemented your position as No 1
It’s great to be called as that, but that’s not true. I don’t get bogged down by success. I follow Buddhist middle path. I am not always carried away by movies. There is a kind of euphoria associated with number tags. I have never been on the top. We know there is challenge round the corner.
Will you continue to be in movies that allows you to take risk? For instance you played Khilji in Padmavat?
Playing a completely negative character was a huge risk. But, playing Khilji was challenging. I was hoping and banking on evolution of audience. I wasn’t sure whether they will love me or hate me. But, I am glad that it was a risk worth taking. I have been enjoying every moment but I look for next challenge.
Simbaa and Padmavat brought several negative feedback from the audience?
I believe in bringing the characters live. As an actor one should not be bothered to get reactions. I do not think that it is all about social change. I have been into entertainment industry and understand that there will always be opposing points, what else can be expected.
How do you look at Gully boy?
All credit goes to Zoya Akhtar, who took the best out of me. I am an exuberant person, who enjoys only massy movies. I always love a character which is not only entertaining but also loud so to say. However, this movie will have a different kind of music and Indian rap genre will see the light of the day.
How do you look at the failure of your movies?
I have always felt sad about the failure of Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl and Lootera. This was the movie where my character was understated. Even film like Dil Dhadakne Do, it was more about reaction of my character. But not many people realised it since they have always seen my loud side. I am a very authentic person, but people do not know that. I hate to express myself like that.
Since your marriage attracted the attention of everyone. How do set the relationship goals.
The trick to any good relationship is compatibility. We really enjoy each others company. We share a laugh a day, which works for us. Our family backgrounds have a major role to play. We have been brought up in the same way, due to which we bond a lot.
Do you look forward to see her as a co actor?
We have been a superhit couple on screen. We have been fireworks, but we need to keep it going. After appearing in several movies together, before marriage, we will now be seen in 83. This is the film based on first world cup lifted by we Indians under the leadership of cricketer Kapil Dev. In the film, I play Kapil Dev and Deepika will be seen as Romi. I am sure we will be a hit.
Karan Johar’s Takht, which features you and ensemble casts haS been making news
When the script came to me, I had the option to play Aurangzeb, but I chose to play his brother Dara Shikoh. I thought that playing a negative character might be repetitive as I already played Khilji in Padmavat. Dara Shikoh will be a very challenging character. I have always enjoyed playing historical characters. Dara Shikoh has been very less discussed in the history thought he was a loyal son, brother and sincere ruler. It will be the most incredible year again.
